Feeding & Nutrition

Manage feeding schedules, track feed inventory, and optimize nutrition for your pigs.

Feeding Schedules

What are Feeding Schedules?

Feeding schedules define how much feed pigs should receive based on their age and weight. PiggyPro includes default schedules for common pig types, but you can customize them for your farm.

Default Schedules Include:

  • • Piglet Starter (0-8 weeks)
  • • Grower Feed (8-16 weeks)
  • • Finisher Feed (16+ weeks)
  • • Lactating Sow Feed
  • • Pregnant Sow Feed
  • • Boar Feed

Creating Custom Feeding Schedules

  1. Go to PiggyPro → Configuration → Feeding Schedules
  2. Click Create
  3. Enter schedule details:
    • Schedule name
    • Pig type (Piglet, Grower, Finisher, etc.)
    • Age range (min/max weeks)
    • Weight range (optional)
    • Feed type
    • Daily amount per pig (kg)
    • Feeding frequency
  4. Save the schedule

Recording Feeding Activities

Track daily feeding to monitor consumption and costs:

  1. Go to PiggyPro → Feeding → Feeding Records
  2. Click Create
  3. Select pig(s) or batch
  4. Choose feed type
  5. Enter quantity fed
  6. Add notes if needed
  7. Save the record

Feed Inventory Management

Managing Feed Types

Configure feed types with nutritional information and costs:

  1. Go to PiggyPro → Configuration → Feed Types
  2. Click Create or edit existing feed type
  3. Enter:
    • Feed name and code
    • Feed category (Starter, Grower, Finisher, etc.)
    • Nutritional content (protein %, energy, etc.)
    • Cost per kg
    • Supplier information

Feed Inventory Tracking

Monitor feed stock levels and receive low-stock alerts:

Adding Feed Stock

  1. Go to PiggyPro → Feeding → Feed Inventory
  2. Click Create
  3. Select feed type and location
  4. Enter quantity received
  5. Add purchase details (cost, supplier, date)

Low Stock Alerts

Set minimum stock levels for each feed type. PiggyPro will alert you when stock falls below the threshold.

Automatic Deductions

When you record feeding activities, inventory is automatically reduced. You can also manually adjust stock levels.

Feed Calculator

Feed Requirements Calculator

Advanced feed planning for your entire farm

Access the Feed Calculator from PiggyPro → Feed & Supplies → Feed Requirements Calculator:

  1. Click Create to start a new calculation
  2. Set the calculation period (start and end dates)
  3. Configure calculation options:
    • Include individual pigs (not in batches)
    • Include pig batches
    • Include lactation adjustments for nursing sows
    • Include pregnancy adjustments for pregnant sows
  4. Click Calculate to generate requirements
  5. View detailed results:
    • Total feed required by type
    • Feed breakdown per pig/batch
    • Estimated total cost
    • Period duration summary
  6. Generate PDF report or confirm the calculation

Smart Feed Adjustments

The calculator automatically adjusts feed requirements for special conditions:

Lactation Adjustment

Nursing sows receive increased feed allocation to support milk production.

Pregnancy Adjustment

Pregnant sows receive adjusted feed based on gestation stage.

Slaughter Planning Integration

For batches with scheduled slaughter, feed calculations account for pigs leaving the batch during the period.

💡 Pro Tip

Run feed calculations weekly to stay ahead of your inventory needs and avoid running out of feed.

Feed Consumption Analysis

Tracking Feed Efficiency

Monitor feed conversion ratio (FCR) and costs:

  • Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR)

Automatically calculated as: Total Feed Consumed (kg) ÷ Weight Gain (kg)

  • Cost per Kg Gain

Track how much it costs to produce each kg of weight gain

  • Consumption Reports

View detailed reports by pig, batch, feed type, or time period

Best Practices

  • Record feeding activities daily for accurate consumption tracking
  • Set minimum stock levels to receive timely alerts
  • Use the feed calculator to plan purchases and avoid waste
  • Monitor FCR to identify underperforming pigs or batches
  • Keep feed types updated with current costs for accurate reporting
  • Store feed in designated locations and track by location
